Google Olympic Logos 2008 Collection

If you might have noticed, Google was changing their logos on a daily basis during the entire duration of the Beijing Summer 2008 Olympics. In fact, they do change their logos under certain dates. When I first saw one last April (22 to be exact — Earth Day), I instantly decided to start collecting. With that, I occasionally always stop by Google each time I get connected.

Actually, I missed Baseball, as I was super busy that day and even slept very early at 8 o’clock in the evening. (No more time to report for duty on the Internet.) That was last Saturday, the first day of eliminations for our campuses’ Centennial Sportsfest. Thanks to Maathiyoose, who was also doing what I did. Image filenames are as is (except the Baseball, of course :P).

Goodbye Tags!

And so I did it. I finally deleted all the tags I accumulated in this blog ever since I started using WordPress as a CMS last September. They seem to have become a mess and I’m starting to dislike seeing them again and again. I “tweeted” about the importance of such tags last month and surprisingly got a reply from someone.

Yes, they are used for SEO and can help with navigation. You can use your tags in tag clouds which shows at a glace which subject your write more about. You can have more of them without having to organization mess that occurs if you do the same with category. You don’t have to keep track of them

I’m actually quite familiar that tags are helpful for SEO. But do I really need to require myself to use them? No. I even asked Euri if she uses them and she told me that she’s not — that her list of tags in the database is completely empty — because her blog is a personal one. She’s right. This one that I have is also personal and I write almost anything under the sun in this turf. I think her statement was one of the factors that finally provoked me to delete 600+ tags. I have to say that I somehow feel light right now. Even so, I do hope to own a different blog/site someday which is targeted to a bigger audience and will definitely need some serious tagging.

Forbidden No More

For the past weeks/days/month I have suffered from “Forbidden” error messages all throughout my domain initially in the subdomains of my hostees and then to various folders. It bothered me a whole lot and it was so frustrating searching for appropriate answers. Even my host couldn’t tell me directly but they did pointed out that it has to do with .htaccess files. Since I did messed with such files before, focusing on it would be the intelligent thing to do. With the old backup I have in my local drive I looked for differences in the said files with those that are currently residing in my (web) folders. It fatefully came to me that I did enabled HotLinking Protection (disabling direct linking, that is, enabling only select websites to access certain files externally) for all files instead of just images. So, basically, what happened was, when any of the sites/folders under my domain is accessed via a different webpage, an error is thrown because HTML and PHP files have been included in the blockage (I suppose), whereas when you input the URL in the address bar and hit enter, the page loads smoothly (though there are cases that a refresh of the page helps). This is another lesson learned and I think I really have to set up a small blog for such issues now.

To Rashid, Sae, and Shan, my apologies for this very delayed fix. And to all those who thought that the site has already been buried six feet under, well, think again.

So Sick of Pink

Meowth

Alright that’s it I can’t take this anymore. Why is it that most bloggers these days are girls who have pink layouts with either cats or ruffles and the like on it? Do they really need to comment in the ’sweetest’ way possible, like calling each other “sis”? And why is it that their domain names need to be so “cute” in a kikay’s point of view? Don’t they look forward to the future? I mean, if they would grow up, do they think it will still suit their preference? I don’t want to be mean or judgmental but I just can’t help it. With the popularity of WordPress growing relatively fast, many and many young girls are drawn to blogging and simply steal use free pink layouts out there.

Failure to Code

Argh, I joined a contest in TopCoder and just this morning I scanned through the entries and I couldn’t help but smile and tremble as I saw them. Then I knew via e-mail that my entry got disqualified. Ah, the pain, it hurts inside. Huha~

Dear simulationelson,

This email is in regard to {insert filename of entry} submitted on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 10:43 SGT

Unfortunately, your TopCoder Studio submission has failed review for the following reason(s):

As stated in the Spec Doc, other colors are acceptable, however, the focus must be kept on the tournament colors. Your design does not focus on the tournament colors.

Sincerely,
Jessica Williams
TopCoder Studio

If only I had enough time, and good attitude not to confuse myself on the requirements (not about the color scheme at all), perhaps I could have made it (yeah, right). I’ll post my entry, maybe later.

Edit: I think the Biology20 3rd long exam we had at 1 this afternoon was the same thing as what our classmates who took the subject last sem had. See, we asked them about it this morning and they said that one essay question was, “If you are on a boat stranded in the middle of the ocean, would you drink seawater for survival?” John Paul immediately exclaimed, “It really is here!” upon seeing that it was indeed in our questionnaire too. Haha. Also, my report in CMSC123 this morning on Selection - Randomized Quick-Select was a success. Yea! =P
